Tips on the obligation to pay GO toll

  • Before starting your journey, ensure that you are suitably informed about the toll obligation in Austria and about how your GO-Box works.
  • Please remember: The toll obligation applies as soon as you cross the national boundary into Austria, or from the first ramp joining a freeway or highway!
  • If anything is unclear, you can contact the ASFINAG Service Center at any time.
  • Note the possibility of paying the toll retrospectively:
    • Within five hours and 100 km, at any GO point of sales or to a toll enforcement officer.
    • If too low a category (number of axles) or the incorrect EURO emission class is used, please contact us within 96 hours: call the ASFINAG Service Center, visit the online SelfCare Portal or use the “Unterwegs” ASFINAG app.
  • In the worst-case scenario: Settle any replacement toll fees on time and correctly. This avoids the risk of costly administrative penalty proceedings.
  • In the event of administrative penalties, contact the district administrative authorities responsible for your case. This authority will be your point of contact for any questions concerning the process.

We take your concerns seriously. Any suggestions for improvements or complaints regarding substitute toll fees are scrutinized thoroughly. However, the payment deadline remains valid, even in cases of complaint.

Automatic enforcement

Enforcement cameras at toll gantries carry out the enforcement procedure automatically. These cameras ensure that tolls are being paid correctly, without interfering with the flow of traffic. All passing vehicles are automatically categorized according to the number of axles, and then checked against the system for correct toll payment. Portable devices are also regularly used for this purpose.

If the automatic enforcement system detects any suspicious activity, an image of the vehicle concerned is sent to the ASFINAG control center (Enforcement Center) and checked manually. The image is discarded if there is no cause for suspicion. Alternatively, if there is still an irregularity, the information is passed on to the toll enforcement officers, or a written request for substitute toll payment is sent out.

Toll enforcement officers monitor compliance with the toll obligation at traffic checkpoints and parking lots, and also monitor moving traffic.

The ASFINAG Service and Monitoring unit

ASFINAG Service and Monitoring unit staff (toll enforcement officers) are public order officers. They are trained at the official instruction and training centers for Austrian law enforcement officers, and sworn in by the district administration authorities. Service and monitoring staff carry an official ID card which they are obliged to present on request.

When on duty across the Austrian highway network, toll enforcement officers can also provide help, advice and information (first aid, assisting at the scenes of accidents and in alleviating traffic jams, etc.).

Powers

The vested powers of enforcement officers

The enforcement officers are vested with the powers to:

  • stop motor vehicle drivers by giving clearly visible or audible signals (e.g. using flashing blue lights, hand-held stop sign, neon signs on rear of monitoring vehicle);
  • determine the identity of the driver and the registered owner;
  • inspect the vehicle, the on-board GO-Box unit, the placement of the vignette, the tachograph, the odometer and/or the EC control device;
  • to request and accept payment for substitute toll fees;
  • if necessary, take appropriate measures to prevent a vehicle from continuing its journey (by using wheel clamps or confiscating the vehicle documents, for example);
  • take appropriate measures to initiate administrative penal proceedings and/or accept a temporary security deposit on behalf of the authorities.
